Bell Tower Celebration

North New Portland Bell Tower Restored

We had a lovely celebration of the completion of the bell tower of the North New Portland Church. In spite of the rainy weather, we had a nice community turnout for worship as well as the pot luck luncheon (with celebration cake) and dedication service. We were very fortunate to have our local builders, painters, planners, etc. in attendance and each of them spoke to the assembled group concerning their individual part in the whole effort. It was moving to hear each one tell of the challenges they faced in the renovation process, how they met the challenges, and to hear them all praising one another’s work and saying that they felt it a privilege to have been a part of renovating such a beautiful and well-made building. The bell was joyfully rung, and those who were able climbed up into the tower for a view.

It is indeed a joy to see the beauty of the steeple and bell tower of the church restored. We still have more work to do, but we feel that the most difficult pieces have been accomplished. Meanwhile, we are reminded that the elegant steeple points our hearts and minds heaven-ward and that the sanctuary windows look out over our neighbors and community, guiding us always to “Let the same mind be in (us) that was in Christ Jesus”. (Philippians 2:5.)

Next Sunday, our combined New Portland and North New Portland worship service moves back to the New Portland Church in the West Village for the winter.

The new face of the North New Portland Church will be beautiful in the crisp October air and spectacular foliage. It is well worth the ride!
